Why You May Be Failing at Self-Care (and How You Can Succeed!)

As we navigate through life, balancing careers, families, and numerous responsibilities, self-care often takes a back seat. For women over 40, this can be particularly challenging. However, self-care is not just a luxury—it’s a necessity. Here’s why you may be struggling with it and how you can succeed with just five minutes a day.

Reasons That You Might Be Failing

  • Time Constraints: Busy schedules often leave little room for self-care. It’s essential to prioritize even a few minutes daily for yourself.

  • Guilt: Many women feel guilty about taking time for themselves, thinking it’s selfish. Remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup.

  • Lack of Routine: Without a structured routine, self-care can easily be forgotten. Establishing a simple, consistent routine can make a world of difference.

Sound familiar? Don't feel bad, I am guilty myself. Recently, I had my bloodwork updated and I can see that my focus has not been on me. If you are honest with yourself, have you been a little slack in me time, too? My bloodwork showed how stress was starting to effect some of my hormone levels. I was confused, I had been exercising and even started IF (intermediate fasting), but still no change. Instead of getting down on myself like most of us do...I focused on what I could change (I will share all the information in a few weeks.)

Reminder: You don't have to do everything all at once.

That can be overwhelming, but in the time you spend reading this, you could have done one of the steps below. Here are some five-minute self-care tips that can recharge your spirit and refocus your mind.

First and foremost, never underestimate the power of deep breathing. Find a quiet corner, close your eyes, and take deep, deliberate breaths. Inhale deeply through your nose, hold for a count of four, and exhale slowly through your mouth. Repeat this cycle for five minutes. This simple practice can reduce stress, improve focus, and bring a sense of calm to your day. It’s a small act with a massive impact, grounding you firmly in the present moment.

Next, let's talk about the magic of a quick skincare routine. Whether you're at home or on the go, a splash of cold water on your face can invigorate your senses. Follow this with a few drops of your favorite face oil or a quick face massage using a jade roller. These actions not only refresh your skin but also provide a reminder that you deserve care and attention. Embrace this moment to affirm your worth; you are deserving of every ounce of love you give yourself.

Finally, engage in a brief but powerful mental reset. Write down three things you’re grateful for or three positive affirmations. Reflect on these for a few minutes, letting the positivity wash over you. This practice isn’t just about fostering gratitude; it’s about reclaiming your narrative and reinforcing your strength. Your journey is unique, and every step you take is a testament to your resilience.
